I was approached by my local Alzheimer’s Society to create items to help launch a new initiative called Side by Side. N E Lincs is one of 35 locations within the UK where this service will be available to those living with dementia
After meeting people who live with caring for those with dementia on my crochet workshops this was something that I really wanted to be able to be involved with.
I was asked to embroider some hoops with some of the mission statements of the Side by Side program and crochet some coasters to be used during the launch of this new project.
What is Side by Side?
Side by Side is a new Alzheimer’s Society service to people with dementia to keep doing the things they love. It will enable them to get out and about with the support of a volunteer.
This extra support can make it easier for people living with dementia to do things we might take for . It will help them feel a real part of their local community.
This fun, friendly, super-flexible service matches someone with dementia with one of our amazing Side by Side volunteers. The volunteer will support them to keep on doing the things they love – and try new things too. That might be going to a football match. Catching the latest movie. A jog round the park, a splash in the pool, a mooch around the shops, a catch-up over coffee or supporting them to volunteer themselves. The possibilities are endless. Whatever they’d like to do, together they decide where and when.
One thing we are sure of is the joy Side by Side brings to people living with dementia. Side by Side empowers people with dementia to continue playing an active part in their community. The service is highly flexible and built around the individual and their needs. Volunteers are linked to a person with similar interests, and the frequency of visits is agreed by mutual arrangement. Ultimately we want every person with dementia to have the opportunity to access the service. This can only happen with the support of volunteers.
